Ashtabula BOE votes against public school survey

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — There will be no referendum to determine where the people stand on the location of the new elementary schools.

A vote by the Ashtabula Area City Schools Board of Education failed Wednesday night on a request for a resolution to join with the city in holding a referendum to “hear the people’s voice.” The vote went down 2-2, with Michael Franklin abstaining. Board president Janine Trebuchon-Wertz and board member Alfred DeCato cast the ‘no’ votes.

Afterward, Plymouth resident Debbie Wright, organizer of the Neighborhood Schools Only Committee, said, “I’m disgusted.”

Board member David Sheldon talked about the high cost of gasoline and the transportation costs parents will incur by driving their elementary students to campus-style schools.

“(A referendum) makes sense to me,” he said.

Board member Steve Candela said, “We’re all here to build a community.”

Candela saw the referendum as a way to build a working relationship with the city.

City Council President Robert Beacom broached the subject in early April by saying he wanted the new elementary schools in the city. Beacom mentioned Candela’s name and how he wants to survey the community. Beacom said he believed the community would be best served if the city and school board split the cost of a $40,000 referendum and commit to do the will of the people. Council backed Beacom 100 percent and directed Clerk of Council LaVette Hennigan to send the school board a letter.
