Diesel leaks into Conneaut Creek By MARK TODD - Staff Writer - mtodd@starbeacon.com Star Beacon CONNEAUT — A stretch of Conneaut Creek was contaminated by spilled diesel fuel that leaked from a drum dumped into the water sometime Tuesday, police said.
State agencies were summoned to the scene Tuesday night to remove as much of the fuel as possible, officers said. A 30-gallon drum was found in the water near the Old Mill Road bridge by a woman preparing to fish in the area, police and firefighters said. The woman first noticed a “heavy chemical odor in the air,” she told police, then spotted the barrel a short distance away. The woman pulled the barrel from the water and placed it near one of the bridge's pillars, police said. A heavy sheen was on the water, and clumps of a semi-solid material were piled near the banks. The heaviest concentrations of the spill were found directly under the Old Mill Road bridge, although evidence of contamination could be seen several hundred feet downstream, police said. City firefighters called to the scene were followed by technicians from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Emergency Management Agency. Booms were used to contain the fuel, which was gathered using large, absorbent pads, firefighters said. Several gallons of the substance, believed to be off-road diesel fuel, remained in the drum, firefighters said. A police report indicates the barrel was "dumped" into the creek by an unknown person or persons. Police responded to the area shortly before 6:30 p.m. People with information regarding the spill are asked to contact the police or fire departments. A lengthy stretch of Conneaut Creek within Ashtabula County was designed a wild and scenic river by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources a few years ago.
