Garage Sale Bonanza needs donations, help
Ninth annual charity sale hopes for best year ever

Star Beacon

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Donations are being accepted for the ninth annual Garage Sale Bonanza, a 14-charity super garage sale at the former Big Lots building in the Saybrook Plaza.

The sale will be July 11-13 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the former Big Lots building in the Saybrook Plaza on Route 20.

“This is going to be our biggest sale yet,” Chairman Dick Mueller said. “We see so much community support for all the charities. The Bonanza is something people really get behind.”

This multi-agency sale will benefit the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League, the David Bowan III Scholarship Fund, Faith in Action Caregivers, Foster Parents Association, Friends of Children's Services, Habitat For Humanity, Help Me Grow, Homesafe, Lions Club of Geneva, Living! With Cancer Support Group, Salvation Army Service Center, Spiderweb of Jefferson and the Wellness and Total Learning Center.

Donations of garage sale items are being accepted now at the Saybrook Plaza store. People can drop off items Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesdays until 8 p.m.

“Last year's sale raised more than $23,000, which was divided up between the charities. When items are donated to the sale, individuals can designate which organization they want to benefit from their donation,” Mueller said.

“This year we are in desperate need of volunteers. We need people who can help accept donations, tag items, create displays and help pick up items,” he said. “We also need people to help out on the day of the sale.”

The sale also needs some tables to help display the items.

“Every year we go through this with the tables. We need to borrow folding tables and we need about 250 of them,” Mueller said. “Donations of old, unwanted tables would also be wonderful.”

What this year’s sale does not need is clothing items and stuffed animals.

While the sale has grown in size over the last nine years, Mueller said the committee is always looking to bring new things to the event.

This year, the sale will kick off with Antique Appraisal Night June 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Like the television show “Antique Road Show,” professionals will be on hand to appraise old and interesting items. Cost is $5 per item.

“This will be a new, interesting part of the Garage Sale Bonanza. How interesting for people to be able to find out what their treasured heirlooms are worth,” Mueller said.

The Best Stuff corner will be back with all the nicest donated antiques and collectibles. The food court and bake sale will also be held. Preview night will be from 6 to 8 p.m. July 10. Cost for preview night is $10 per person.

“The preview sale is a great way for really sharp bargain hunters to get first pick of the sale items,” Mueller said.
