Waterline break closes county treasurer’s office By DORIS COOK - Staff Writer Star Beacon JEFFERSON —Ashtabula County maintenance employee Cory Hubbard didn’t expect to see a hallway full of water as he arrived in the Ashtabula County Justice Center early Tuesday.
Water was flowing down the hallway from County Treasurer Robert Harvey’s office, Hubbard said. “An interior half-inch waterline located behind a wall inside the treasurer’s office, had broke. I figured that’s where the break was located. We had to cut the wall section to get to the line and cap it.” Hubbard broadcast messages on other maintenance workers’ radios to come over to help mop up water. The county crew used large-size vacuums and mops to soak up most of the water. Hubbard called County Administrator Janet Discher about the water break. Discher and maintenance crews called in ServPro Co., of Parma Heights, to come in to complete the cleanup. The company used fans and vacuums to remove water from office carpeting in the treasurer and auditor’s offices. “There is a floor drain just west of the treasurer’s office … . It took some water out (slowly),” Hubbard said. “We have had water leaks before in this older section of the buildings.” Treasurer office employees called their boss, who was attending a conference in Columbus. Harvey told the employees to close up and leave for the day. The treasurer’s office is expected to reopen today, Discher said. She had no estimate of damages. Insurance adjusters were in the building Tuesday afternoon, looking over the watery mess.
