A Fern Avenue couple got a rude awakening when thieves snatched the family’s beloved pug from their yard. Don Felsted let 3-year-old Cammie Sue outside for a few minutes early Monday morning while he got a cup of coffee. When he opened the door to let her in, the dog was gone. Felsted and his girlfriend, Jennifer Hughell, searched two hours for Cammie Sue, but to no avail. “She never leaves the yard,” Felsted said. “Never, ever. Someone took her.” Hughell is devastated. She even has the letter carrier looking for her. Pug, a snub-nosed monkey-faced breed from the Far East, is a popular pup among dog lovers these days for its looks and behavior. The breed became more famous after it was featured in movies and TV commercials. A purebred pug can cost hundreds of dollars, and the dogs of the breed can be targets for thieves because they are small, and can be picked up and carried off easily, police said. Felsted and Hughell filled out a police report and checked with the Animal Protective League. Ashtabula Police Sgt. John Koski said people need to put their pets on a leash and restrain them. Pet owners never should turn their backs on their dogs and even with a fenced-in yard, there are no guarantees a dog will not be stolen. The only guarantee against pet theft is to watch the pet carefully, Koski said.
