GENEVA — A motorcyclist posted bond Monday but still faces drug charges in a crash that landed him in a ditch and in the Ashtabula County Jail, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reports.
OHP Trooper Rick Caraway found Joseph H. Glovitch, 41, of Austinburg Township, in a ditch along Knowlton Road in Rock Creek, Thursday, OHP reports.
Disoriented and allegedly under the influence, Glovitch was clinging to the handlebars of his crashed motorcycle and fell back into the ditch as he tried to walk away from Caraway, the crash report shows.
Caraway arrested and searched Glovitch and found a hypodermic syringe with a clear liquid in Glovitch’s coat pocket, OHP Lt. Mike Harmon said.
“The evidence was sent to be analyzed, but those results are not back yet,” Harmon said.
Glovitch refused to undergo the test for operating a vehicle while impaired, Harmon said. Glovitch did not offer a plea at his arraignment Friday in Western County Court before Judge Richard Stevens, court records show.
“It was pretty clear that (Glovitch) was under the influence,” Harmon said.
Court records show this to be the second time in four incidents that Glovitch has refused to undergo the OVI test, court records show.
Glovitch was arraigned on charges of possession of a drug-abuse instrument, operating a vehicle under the influence — his fourth such offense in 20 years — driving under suspension, and operating a vehicle without reasonable control, court records show.
Glovitch is no stranger to local law enforcement, Ashtabula County court records show. His criminal record stretches back to 1996 and includes two counts of domestic violence and criminal mischief and misconduct, drug paraphernalia and weapons charges. Glovitch’s record of traffic citations, including a 1994 OVI and three instances of driving under suspension, and also includes failure to comply with the order of an officer and two instances of operating a vehicle without reasonable control, Ashtabula County court records show.
