JEFFERSON — A 36-year-old Geneva man remains in Ashtabula County jail Friday after being unable to post bond in Western County Court for multiple felony charges against him. Assistant county prosecutor Amanda Condon filed the rape, kidnapping and felonious assault charges against John H. Schafer of 6509 South River Road, Geneva, following his arrest Wednesday by sheriff’s deputies.
The alleged attack against the 27-year-old female victim took place in the early hours of Tuesday. The victim gave an account of the beatings and rape to deputies when interviewed at UH Geneva Medical Center where she sought treatment for injuries.
Schafer had allegedly used a knife during the attack. The woman managed to get away, then went to the hospital, reports show.
During Schafer’s appearance Thursday before Western County Court Judge Richard Stevens, a $50,000 cash or surety bond was set. The defendant did not post bond and returned to jail, a court spokesman said.
In addition, Stevens issued a temporary protection order for the victim. A preliminary hearing for Schafer is set for 11:45 a.m. May 14.
