Published May 08, 2008 11:38 pm - Female federal inmate found dead in jail bed By DORIS COOK - Staff Writer Star Beacon JEFFERSON — A 61-year-old woman being held at Ashtabula County jail for the U.S. Marshal’s Service was found dead in her cell bed Thursday morning, said Detective Lt. Van Robison.
The woman’s name is being withheld pending family members being notified, he said. “It appears she died in her sleep. Prisoners get up at 7 a.m. and cells are unlocked. The Jefferson Emergency Rescue squad was called, but couldn’t revive her,” Robison said. Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office investigator Jim Baehr was called in for the death investigation. Baehr said the woman was pronounced dead at the jail. A jail nurse and doctor were there at the time. “Nothing looked suspicious and there was no foul play. The body was sent in to the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy,” Baehr said. By Thursday night, officials still had been unable to find the woman’s relatives. Baehr said a preliminary cause of death could be released today. Meanwhile, U.S. Marshal’s Office chief deputy Angel Gonzalez at the Cleveland bureau said the woman was being held in Ashtabula County just overnight. She had failed to report to the U.S Bureau of Prisons in Hazelton, W.Va. Wednesday, was then found and arrested. The woman was sentenced in February for a fraud case conviction dealing with theft of government funds, Gonzalez said.
