Real estate agent finds plants in Madison Township home By MARGIE TRAX PAGE - Staff Writer - mtrax@starbeacon.com Star Beacon MADISON TOWNSHIP — As if the real-estate market weren’t already struggling, a local real-estate agent was the person who found 14 marijuana plants growing in a house he was supposed to sell, Madison Township Detective Dan Boerner said.
“The real-estate agent was supposed to be showing the house for sale and found the marijuana plants and lights. The agent called police right away,” Boerner said. A 29-year-old man, who will not be identified until after his arraignment, rents the house in the 6300 block of Berwick Road. He knew the property was for sale, but didn’t clear out his plants in time, Boerner said. Boerner said 14 plants do not constitute a major marijuana operation, but warranted the arrest on various drug charges. “He just left the stuff out for anyone to find. It is often difficult to catch marijuana growers because unless you smell it, you aren’t likely to notice it. There aren’t a lot of telltale signs of pot growing,” he said. Officers seized the plants and will dry the leaves prior to weighing them. After that evidence and information are collected, the drugs will be destroyed by court order, Boerner said. The suspect will be arraigned Tuesday in Painesville Municipal Court on possession of criminal tools, cultivating marijuana, possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia, Boerner said.
