CONNEAUT — Fire caused severe damage to a Lee Street house late Wednesday night, firefighters said.
Personnel and equipment from four fire departments — Conneaut, Monroe Township, North Kingsville and West Springfield, Pa. — were summoned to 252 Lee St. at 11 p.m.
The owner and lone occupant at the time, Chester Arcaro Jr., escaped the burning house without injury, firefighters said. He was alerted to the blaze by a smoke detector, according to a fire report.
No firefighters were injured at the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters saw flames shooting out the west side of the building. Lt. Wallace Heinonen, Conneaut’s fire investigator, said the blaze started near a chimney that serviced a woodburning stove. Cause of the fire is undetermined, he said.
Damage reports on the fire varied. In a fire report, firefighters estimated the damage at $60,000 to the building and $40,000 to the contents. Heinonen said an insurance agent told him the damage total approached $200,000.
Firefighters were at the scene until 1:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the fire report.
