BOIL ALERT

— GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — More than 100 county water customers along Lake Road are under a boil alert until Friday after a large water-main break crippled the village’s westernmost plumbing Tuesday, Larry Meaney, director of the county’s Department of Environmental Services, reports.
Residents from 4876 to 5609 Lake Road, near Adventure Zone park, Grandview Drive and North Putnam Drive are advised to boil water used for drinking and cooking, vigorously for two minutes.
“This is absolutely a precautionary measure mandated by the (Environmental Protection Agency),” Meaney said. “Always better (to be) safe than sorry. We don’t want anyone to get sick.”
Meaney said though the main break was close to the Geneva State Park Lodge and Conference Center, the lodge is not included in the boil alert.
“There is no danger to lodge customers or other GOTL residents. This boil alert is very specific,” Meaney said.
Meaney said the waterline break, which occurred just after midnight, depressurized the old cast-iron lines. The pipes splintered in both directions in cracks 12 to 15 feet long.
“That depressurization is the reason for the boil alert,” Meaney said. “We have put a lot of time, energy and effort to find the extent of this significant break.”
On Friday, county water officials will test the water to ensure its potability, Meaney said.
GOTL waterlines are on the county’s list for replacement, as emergency repairs can be costly and inconvenient, Meaney said.
“We know this is a fragile part of the county system,” he said. “Right now, Smolen Engineering is designing replacement line plans. From north to south on Route 534, we hope to replace the system in phases to reduce these types of maintenance measures.”
