Local stylists win big at Toni & Guy Hair Show

ERIE, Pa. - - Two Ashtabula residents styled their way to the top at the annual Toni & Guy Hair Show held March 7 at the Avalon Hotel Presque Isle Ballroom.
The hair cutting finalist, Heidi Nelling of Ashtabula, won for her classy "Sharon Osborne" inspired creation, while Megan Wagner, also of Ashtabula, took first place in the Modern Man competition with her "Hunk of a Punk" insight.
For the first time in Erie's Toni & Guy Hair Show history, there was a tie in the coloring class. Sharing the spotlight were Ashley Sedmak from Conneaut with her arc bands of color resembling a rainbow, and dimension of strawberry blonde personalization by Pittsburgh's Jessica Ulanowicz.
Nearly 700 people applauded 65 models as they walked the runway, showing off hair styles created by Toni & Guy students. The show was nearly triple the size of last year's show and included five categories.
"It was very exciting - - I wish (Star Beacon) readers could have been there," said Dan Bickel, marketing manager for Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy. "The competition and creating a new hair style is part of the students' training."
The show was judged by stylists from leading area salons.
The first-place winners will have their work entered into the Toni & Guy Photographic Awards, which will be held later this year at the academy's headquarters in Dallas, Texas.
Since many Toni & Guy graduates work in high-end salons and spas, show participating is an important part of their professional portfolio, Bickel said.
The Erie Academy is the oldest Basic Academy on the east coast, and is only one seven Toni & Guy Academies in the U.S.
