SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — A structure fire lit up the sky during the wee hours of Wednesday morning, destroying a cottage located at 6223 Lake Road W., Unit 3.
At 2:40 a.m., the Saybrook Township Fire Department responded to the property owned by Lilja Kangas, Fire Capt. Gary Nahrstedt said.
The cottage was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived, he said.
“While the cottage was a total loss, we were successful in saving an adjacent cottage and vehicles,” Nahrstedt said. “This is a property that has several rental cottages occupying it.”
Mutual aid was provided by Geneva Fire Department with manpower and an engine company.
“We are doing a joint investigation into the cause of the fire with the State Fire Marshall’s Office,” he said. “We do know that the utilities were disconnected at the time of the fire.”
There were no injuries in the fire, and the cottage was vacant at the time.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Nahrstedt said.
