THOMPSON TOWNSHIP — Geauga County Sheriff Dan McClelland confirmed on Tuesday that Robert Olszewski, 34, of Thompson Township, admitted to having fatally shot Edgardo Luna Barcelo, 46, of Ashtabula, last Friday night.
Barcelo was the boyfriend of Olszewski’s estranged wife, Laura Olszewski, of Rome Township.
Olszewski, who claimed self-defense when questioned by deputies, has not be charged in the shooting incident. The shooting took place at Olszewski’s trailer home at 99 Juniper Drive, Rustic Pines Mobile Home Park, on Route 166.
“We are still investigating this case. No one has been charged yet. Investigators are questioning more people. It will be up to the Geauga County prosecutor to take the investigation, when completed, to a grand jury or not,” McClelland said.
The Star Beacon learned that Barcelo, and Laura and Robert Olszewski apparently knew one another when they all lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., several years ago. McClelland said Barcelo came to Ohio several months ago.
He lived with Olszewski’s wife and her two young children on Price Road in Rome Township. The husband had visitation rights during the couple’s separation.
A preliminary autopsy report on Barcelo’s cause of death indicates he died of a single gunshot wound in the chest, according to Greg Boyles, Geauga County Coroner’s Office investigator. The report was released Tuesday.
Geauga County coroner, Dr. Kevin Chartrand, is a waiting toxicology and other forensic reports, which will be released by the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office. This could take up to six weeks.
Barcelo was shot at close range by Robert Olszewski as the two men argued and struggled inside the trailer. Olszewski told deputies Barcelo forced his way inside the house, accompanied by another male.
There was no evidence that Barcelo and his companion had any weapons when they came to Robert Olszewski’s trailer. The 12-gauge Remington shotgun used in the shooting was owned by Olszewski, McClelland said.
Barcelo’s companion fled the scene before deputies arrived. Law-enforcement investigators have identified the man and want to question him.
The confrontation between Olszewski and Barcelo began on Friday with an exchange of telephone calls. Olszewski had reportedly called Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department, alleging Barcelo had “acted inappropriately” around the couple’s two younger children, the sheriff said.
A different version of the relationship between the dead man and the Olszewski couple emerged Tuesday from a friend of Laura Olszewski.
Requesting her name be withheld, the woman said: “Ed (Barcelo) moved in with Laura about two months ago. He was helping her and needed a place to live. Laura was separated from her husband, for two years, after moving here from Colorado. They all knew each other in Colorado. Robert is an ex-Marine, Laura told me. She left him because he abused and beat her.”
The woman said she befriended Laura Olszewski and the children months ago at an area church.
