ASHTABULA — Ashtabula County commissioners Tuesday evening approved a resolution to obtain membership in the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments.
The membership will cost the county about $25,000. The fee is based upon a per-capita formula. Membership is for one year.
Board president says membership is a good investment for not only the county, which has belonged to the council in the past.
“I support it 100 percent,” Carlo said. “Even though the economy is tough, we need to do this to get more funds for our county.”
Eastgate has been selected by the Ohio Department of Development as the source through which the federal stimulus money will be funneled to the local level, said commissioner Joseph Moroski. Eastgate also works with the Appalachian Regional Commission. The county received ARC designation last year and is thus eligible for funding.
Carlo said membership could benefit townships in Ashtabula County, as well, which may be able to find need matching funds for grant application by working through the commissioners and Eastgate.
