’Bula man pays dearly for deer meat

— ASHTABULA — He only wanted to make a buck.
Jack B. Miller, 38, 5122 Benefit Ave., Ashtabula, was arrested on Sunday by Ashtabula County sheriff’s deputies on charges of bribery-corrupt witness, criminal trespass, obstructing official business, theft and theft by deception.
According to the deputy’s report, Miller was selling a deceiving amount of frozen deer meat door-to-door.
Around 8:20 p.m., deputies responded to call from Pierpont Township, where a 31-year-old female had given $40 to Miller for 40 pounds of frozen deer meat. The victim told deputies Miller, who was unidentified at the time, told her a friend referred him to her and that he needed to sell his frozen deer meat because his freezer had broken.
After being paid, Miller then handed the victim a box with two frozen deer-steak packages and a few packages of ground deer meat on top, deputies said. Underneath the top meat were catalogues, and books and magazines wrapped up in butcher paper, according to the report.
Several other victims from Pierpont, Jefferson and Plymouth townships were identified through the investigation, deputies said.
One victim became suspicious, refused the meat and wrote down Miller’s license plate number, which was reported to deputies, according to the report.
After deputies questioned Miller at his residence, Miller went back to the Pierpont Township victim’s house and tried to return the $40 through a money order, according to the report. The victim refused and contacted deputies.
Miller told deputies he made around $500 with his deer-meat enterprise.
