Cub Scouts don’t get cold shoulder in Madison

MADISON TOWNSHIP — Warm smoke wafted from a fire Saturday morning as Cub Scouts learned to cook outside during the Cub Scout Freezeout at Camp Stigwandish.
The Grand River district includes cub packs from Ashtabula and eastern Lake counties.
“This is the first for the Grand River District,” said leader Rick Summerton.
He said heated cabins are open for the children and leaders to stay during the weekend event. “They can come in Friday and stay Saturday or come Saturday and leave Sunday,” Summerton said.
Some cub packs decided to just come for the Saturday experience and not stay overnight, Summerton said.
The scouts were rotated among a variety of stations that included first aid education, Indian lore, sling shot shooting, sled rescue, cooking, team building games and cooking, he said.
Keith Gillenkirk and his 10-year-old son, Cornell, both from Orwell, said they enjoyed the exxperience. They both said it was a bit chilly in the cabin but it was worth it.
Dave Gray of Painesville brought members of his Boy Scout troop to help facilitate the team building games for the younger boys.
He said it helps them learn how to create opportunities that work for the younger boys that may be different than their experience with older scouts. “We always try to help out (with the Cub Scouts),” Gray said.
Troops from many area communities including Perry, Painesville, Andover, Orwell and Conneaut were represented at the event.
