Bob Skelding, 49, is listed in serious but stable condition at a hospital in Meridian, Miss., according to news reports. He was in Ohio in late October when he drove his team of horses along Route 20 while on his nine state, 1,700 mile journey. Last week’s accident killed two of Skelding’s four Percheron horses. The two surviving horses are being cared for by a veterinarian, according to the news report. A fund has been set up in Skelding’s name at the Citizen's Bank in Macon, Miss., said his friend, Valerie Dunne. The bank can be contacted at (662) 726-5861. Skelding was driving his horses and homemade wagon/house on a stretch of Route 45 South that has little or no shoulder, according to media reports. Two 18-wheelers traveling side-by-side crested a hill, and one of the trucks hit the wagon, “smashing it to bits,” and the tractor-trailer landed on it side, according to media reports. On July 28, Skelding hitched up his four Percheron draft horses to his 16-foot-long wagon/house and embarked on his dream: to travel across the country, according to his interview with the Star Beacon. Skelding’s sister, Cathy Fagan, told the Meridian Star newspaper, that Skelding was “the adventurer” in the family. She also said her brother is very lucky to be alive.
