WINDSOR TOWNSHIP — A 14-year-old Amish boy was killed Saturday evening after he was struck by a truck on South Windsor Road just west of Route 534.
Paul R. Troyer, of 5441 S. Windsor Road, was pronounced dead at the scene around 5 p.m. Troyer was killed right in front of his house. The truck, driven by Michael J. Baker of Middlefield, was traveling westbound on South Windsor Road when it struck the boy, said Sgt. Jerad Sutton, of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Saybrook Post.
Troyer was traveling with his brother in a buggy with two horses. His brother was standing, driving the two-wheeled buggy, while Troyer was sitting in it. Troyer complained of being cold, jumped off the eastbound buggy and into the path of the truck, said Rich Mongell, Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office chief investigator.
“It’s almost like he didn’t even see the car coming,” Sutton said. “He hopped off and as he hopped off he got hit.”
Sutton said it appears the boys may have been having trouble with the cart and stopped when Troyer jumped off. The cart and the horses were not involved in the accident.
Baker and his passenger, Ray Slaubaugh of Warren, were treated on the scene by South Central Ambulance personnel. Windsor Township Fire Department also responded to the scene.
Sutton said alcohol is not suspected in the crash. No further information was available Saturday night. The accident is under investigation by OHP.
