ASHTABULA — In order to accommodate rest stops and anticipated traffic, the NAACP bus trip to the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama will leave earlier than scheduled.
Adam Holman, president of the Ashtabula chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said 35 people signed up to travel to Washington, D.C., to attend the event.
“We still have some seats on the bus,” trip organizer Betty Holman said. “And we will take reservations until Friday.”
The inauguration will begin at noon Jan. 20. The bus will depart at 9:30 p.m., Jan. 19, from the KeyBank parking lot on Park Avenue in Ashtabula, and is scheduled to arrive at approximately 6 a.m., Jan. 20., in Washington. The bus will return to Ashtabula at 3 a.m. Jan. 21.
The cost of the bus trip for couples is $160. Reservations must be made by Friday. To reserve, mail a check to: Ashtabula NAACP Bus Trip, c/o Adam Holman, 1123 W. 43rd St., Ashtabula, 44004.
“Of course, all our times are estimated,” Betty Holman said. “We really don’t know what to expect as far as traffic, so we are giving the bus driver some extra time.”
Betty Holman said the bus has a bathroom and will make frequent stops along the way. Passengers may take snacks, books and cell phones on the bus, and some snacks will be provided free of charge.
In addition to money for meals and souvenirs, each passenger must take $10 for transportation on Metrorail, which will transport passengers from the bus to the Washington Mall, near the U.S. Capitol, and back to the bus.
