Fire destroys garage and damages house By ELLEN KOLMAN - Staff Writer - ekolman@starbeacon.com Star Beacon SHEFFIELD TOWNSHIP — The red glow of the fire could be seen through the trees from Plymouth Ridge Road as a garage and part of a house burned on Baldwin Road Tuesday evening.
Sheffield Township Volunteer Fire Department received a call at 5:15 p.m. for a fully involved structure fire at 4609 Baldwin Road, said Capt. Claude Kobernik, who was the firefighter in charge of the scene. When fire crews arrived, the garage was engulfed, and the north side of the house, which is closest to the garage, was beginning to burn, Kobernik said. The two-story log home appeared to have suffered damage from heat and smoke from the fire, which began in the garage. Although the garage was destroyed, the house can be repaired, Kobernik said. Fire departments from Monroe, Kingsville and North Kingsville townships were called to assist in battling the blaze and heavy smoke. An ambulance from Plymouth Township also responded. No one was injured in the fire. The property is owned by Mary Jo and Allen Taylor, said Tom Burris, who is a Kingsville Township Fire Department auxiliary volunteer firefighter. “My son called me. He saw the glow,” Burris said. “They needed all of these tanker trucks because there are no hydrants out here.” Cause of the fire was undetermined at press time Tuesday night.
