Election reaction WE SUGGEST: It showed country moving in right direction
Star Beacon
No doubt the election of a new president is an inspiring moment for a lot of Americans.
It can be an uplifting time particularly to those people who feel the country has been heading in the wrong direction and the belief the person they supported and elected will set the nation in the right direction.
In the case of Barack Obama, who was elected Tuesday as the nation’s 44th president, a lot of people were uplifted not only because they feel the country has been heading in the wrong direction, but more importantly they feel this country in its 234th year is heading in the right direction.
It has been ever since it came into being in 1776. It is 234 years of building a nation of solid bricks, comprised of our blood, sweat and tears. It doesn’t always seem like the journey has been one of forward direction, but it has. Tuesday, we decided one of those bricks is to have a president not based on his or her skin color, religion or creed, but on the quality of who he or she is. That is one solid brick put in place.
Those feelings in regards to this election are profound and real because that brick has been put in place. Those feelings are felt equally here in Ashtabula County.
“The election of the first black president is inspiring for children of all color, to know that one day they could be president,” said Chrissy Carberry, 29 of Ashtabula.
Teresa Taylor, 23, of Ashtabula said, “I’m glad I lived to see it. I’m glad I voted.”
Steve Sargent, executive director of the Samaritan House in Ashtabula, said. “It felt good for people I know who walked to school while others rode the bus … who feared lynching … who never stopped believing in our country — and to be able to see this day.”
