JONESBORO, Ark. — Loren A. Merritt, age 89, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at Lawrence County Nursing Home, Walnut Ridge, Ark.

He was born Feb. 11, 1923, in Paden City, W.Va., to Ray and Blanche (Kidder) Merritt, grew up in Wheeling, W.Va., graduated from Warwood High School, Wheeling, W.Va., and attended David Lipscomb College, Nashville, Tenn. An honorably discharged Veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II in the European Theater and participated in the D-Day invasion on Omaha Beach. 

Prior to his retirement in 1981, he worked as a Lab Tech at Union Carbide, Metals Division, Ashtabula, Ohio. After his retirement, he and his wife, Elizabeth, moved to Parkersburg, W.Va., where he managed the Ohio Valley Christian College bookstore for 5 years and was a member of the Kiwanis Club. In 1986, they moved to The Villages, Fla., where he managed the driving range and they lived until Elizabeth’s death in 1997.

Mr. Merritt was a lifetime member of The Churches of Christ and placed his membership at the local congregation, wherever he lived.  He loved choral music and sang with the Men’s Glee Club and Radio Chorus in Nashville, Tenn., and the Town Choir in Ashtabula, Ohio.  He was an avid golfer and played on leagues in Ashtabula, Ohio, and The Villages, Fla.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Book) of Jonesboro, Ark.; daughters, Peggy (Patrick) Shunk of Lansdale, Pa., Barbara (Nick) Pizzi of Aurora, Ohio; and a grandson, Sean Thornton of Kent, Ohio.

Mr. Merritt donated his body to Memphis Educational Research Institute, Memphis, Tenn. There will be a memorial service in Jonesboro, Ark. at a later date.
