CONNEAUT — Eugene “Gene” Maleckar, age 79, of Conneaut, passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at his home after a brief illness.

Eugene was born Dec. 27, 1933, in Conneaut, to John and Mollie (Walter) Maleckar. He lived his entire life in Conneaut and graduated from Conneaut High School in 1951. On August 29, 1959, Gene married Jeanne King at St. Francis Cabrini Church.

Eugene was the Production Supervisor for The Conneaut News Herald and later worked in the composing department at the Ashtabula Star Beacon. He retired in 1999 after a career spanning 48 years. Eugene was an accomplished accordionist and in the 1950's was the leader of the Gene Maleckar Orchestra with performances in Ohio and Pennsylvania. He was also a talented ballroom dancer and taught at the Mel Franc Dance Studio. He shared his love of music as a teacher at the Alex Milac Accordion Studio.

Eugene never met a stranger. His quick wit and good humor will be sorely missed, but will live on in the fond recollections of his family and friends.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Eugene is survived by his wife of 54 years; his three children, Lisa (Michael) Thacker of Strongsville, John Maleckar of Arlington, Va. and Ann (John) Yurco of Roselle, Ill. Gene is also survived by his brother, LeRoy (Sharon) Maleckar; and grandchildren, James and Julia Thacker, Katie Maleckar and Christopher and Matthew Yurco; sister-in-law, Miriam King; brother-in-law, David (Donna) King; nieces, Stacey Maleckar, Amy (David) Smith, Jodi Slayton; nephews, Todd (Sarah) Watts and Joshua King; as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant brother, John.

The family has planned a private memorial service.
