WEST SPRINGFIELD, Pa. — Ralph P. Hovis, age 84, of West Springfield, Pa., passed away Wednesday evening, August 14, 2013, at Rolling Fields Elder Care, Conneautville, Pa.

He was born April 27, 1929, in Brookfield, Ohio, and was the son of Paul L. and Eva Mae (Palm) Hovis.

An area resident since the early 1950’s, Ralph spent his early life in the Greenville, Pa., area where he was employed at Greenville Steel Car and worked for his uncle at a sawmill. He also worked for the Nickel Plate Railroad and did logging for Neal Blood Logging. 

Ralph married Lola M. (Walbridge) in 1956. An area resident most of her life, Lola worked at the former Laux Drive-in and G.E. Conneaut Base Plant. She was a member of the “Bingo Club” and, together, they enjoyed snowmobiling and watching Nascar racing. Ralph built race cars for local racers and briefly raced himself. He enjoyed playing the mandolin, motorcycling, roller-skating, horseshoe pitching, and hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his daughter, Tammy (Hovis) Rivers (Dan Killian) of West Springfield, Pa.; two sons, Lary (Xiaomei) Hovis of Conneaut, Ohio and Glen (Pam) Hovis of Tularosa, N.M.; two sisters, Francis Scott and Vera Owens, both of Greenville, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Jim Seese, Jeremy Seese, Erika Seese, Jeremiah (Amy) Hovis, Joshua (Sarah) Hovis, Beth (Charles) Parker and Amanda (Roy) Parker; five great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and more distant relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ken Nelson; and his wife, Lola, three weeks ago on July 25, 2013.

Calling Hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, August 19th, at MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio, immediately followed by a gathering at the Marcy Family Center, 180 Harbor St., Conneaut.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 79, East Springfield, Pa. 16411, or to the John Kanzius Research Foundation, 915 State St., Erie, Pa. 16501. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank the staff at Rolling Fields for taking such good care of their parents.
