SEBRING, Fla. — Johanna M. Gierth, age 94, of Sebring, Fla., passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Good Shepherd Hospice House. She was surrounded by her loving children.

Born in Canton, Ohio, on August 10, 1919, Johanna spent her first 30 years in the small Saxon farming community of Wolz, Transylvania, where she was married and had her daughters. At the end of WWII with their land and house taken from them (behind the Iron Curtain), her father encouraged her to go back to America where she was born.

Upon moving to the United States, she lived in Cleveland and after being joined by her husband in 1952 she had her two boys Ron and Rich and later in Ashtabula Ed. She worked at Rockwell Plastics for 25 years. After retiring, she traveled widely to places such as Great Britain, France, Portugal, Morocco, Hawaii, Hong Kong and China. In 2001, she moved to Sebring, Fla.

Johanna was a skilled gardener and incredible chef and baker. She will be fondly remembered for her excellent Nut Rolls and Pizzelles that she baked for special occasions. Reading and knitting were her favorite pastimes. She knitted over 1000 sweaters and countless hats and slippers for her family and friends. They will be cherished. Johanna crafted many of these as well as lap blankets specifically as donations to churches in Ohio, West Virginia and Florida. She was member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Ashtabula.

Her biggest accomplishment in life, she always stated, were her children. She is survived by her daughters, Mathilda Wilfong of Sebring, Fla. and Herta Warner of Ashtabula, Ohio; sons, Richard Gierth of Sebring, Fla. and Ed (Mary) Gierth of San Antonio, Texas; and grandchildren, Kari Warner Matsko, John (Dawnn) Warner, Clare Gierth, Anne Gierth and Rose Gierth.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Gierth; and a brother, Mathias Gierth.

A Graveside Service will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 12th, at Ridgeview Cemetery, 7205 Austinburg Road, Ashtabula. Celebrant, Pastor Bill Wesner, of New Life Lutheran Church, will officiate.

If desired, contributions may be made in her memory to the Good Shepherd Hospice House, 1110 Hammock Road, Sebring, Fla. 33870-6222 or the Messiah Lutheran Church Foundation, 615 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, Ohio 44004. DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio is in charge of arrangements.
