ASHTABULA — David W. Strong, age 95, joined his Lord and Savior, Saturday, August 24, 2013, following a short, unexpected hospitalization. His wife, Martha and other members of his family were present and comforting him.

David was born in Ashtabula on Jan. 8, 1918, to Lewis T. and Estelle (Flint) Strong; he was one of the couple’s ten children. He graduated from Ashtabula High School class of 1935.

He served his country during World War II as a member of the 6th Marine Corps Division in the Pacific Theater, including Guadalcanal, Okinawa, and China. During the Korean Conflict he was called to active duty with 137th Tank Battalion of the Ohio National Guard. David was deployed to the Nevada Test Grounds where he witnessed one of the early tests of a nuclear weapon.

David married the former Martha A. Elzeer on Nov. 25, 1950 in the Prospect Presbyterian Church. They resided in Ashtabula Township for all of their married life.

Mr. Strong was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Ashtabula in several capacities; starting as substitute letter carrier and later a window clerk, Superintendent of Mail, and was the Assistant Postmaster when the position was eliminated and he retired in July of 1977.

In his retirement, David did volunteer work with the American Red Cross. He was also a life member of Elks Lodge BPOE 203, the Veterans of Foreign Wars #943 and the American Legion Dewey-Howlett Post #103. He was president of several local organizations, including Buckeye Music Boosters, the local chapters of American Field Service, the Association of Postal Supervisors, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Mr. Strong had a lifelong commitment to the Prospect (now Trinity) Presbyterian Church, serving at various times as Trustee, Elder, Sunday School Teacher, and member and chairman of various committees. He was involved in the funding of the current church building. For eight consecutive years, he was the area delegate to the Stewardship Committee of the Presbytery of the Western Reserve.

In addition to his wife, Martha, David is survived by his sons, Bradley (Adelaide) of Ashtabula, David (Dorothy) of Topsham, Maine, and Mark of Columbus; grandchildren, Debbie (Anthony) Jones of Plymouth Township, Scott (Sophia) of Verona, N.J., Terry (Tammy) of Saybrook Township, Neel (Tonya) of North Kingsville, and Chad, Jason, and Aimee, all of Ashtabula, Joel (Kimberly) and Todd (Brittany), both of Virginia Beach, Va., and Cassie, also of Ashtabula; 18 great grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Bruce Strong in 2008; his siblings, Lucy Taylor, Lillian Diemer, Edith Hazeltine, Esther McKeown, Margaret Heino, Nathan Strong, Theodore Strong, and two who died in infancy; and his beloved parents.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, August 29th, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1342 Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Quincy Worthington officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery with Military Honors.

Calling Hours will be observed from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, August 28th, at ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Ave., Ashtabula.
