ASHTABULA — Eugene E. Allen, age 86, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
The son of Henry and Doris (Burgess) Allen, he was born on May 21, 1927 in Ashtabula and had remained a lifelong area resident. Eugene served during WWII in the United States Army, and was stationed in Guam.
An over the road truck driver for more than thirty-five years, he worked independently and then later with All States and P.I. E. trucking companies.
Eugene and his wife Jane celebrated forty-two years of marriage prior to her death on Feb. 21, 1994.
Eugene enjoyed his collection of Lionel trains which he had set up in his basement. He liked working on cars and trucks, while he was driving his truck he was also his own mechanic. He had the ability to fix anything mechanical.
Camping with his family on summer vacations gave him great joy and happiness. Eugene was a member of several organizations in the Ashtabula area; including the Moose, Eagles, American Legion, VFW and the Friendship Club which met every Friday night at Shea's Theater.
Eugene's greatest joy came from being a husband, dad, and Big Poppa. He loved and cherished his family and the times spent with them.
He will be remembered for his work ethic, which he passed on to his children, his love of family, and his strength and faith.
He is survived by his children, Eugene D. (Charlene) Allen of Rock Creek and Deborah J. (Justin) Howell and Bonnie D. (Michael) Phillips, both of Columbus; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held 6 p.m., Monday, March 24th, at DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Candy Thomas, Pastor of United Church of Christ in Austinburg, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio.
Calling Hours will be observed from 4 to 6 p.m., Monday, at the Funeral Home.
