ALLIANCE — Irene Soltys was born in Nanticoke, Pa. on June 10, 1930, and died on Wednesday, May 1, 2013.
She graduated from Nanticoke High School, attended Alliance College in Pa., and completed her Medical Technology Studies at the Abington Hospital in Abington, Pa.
Irene retired in 1989 from the Alliance Community Hospital as a supervisor of the hematology lab. Prior to that, she worked in the lab at the Ashtabula Hospital for seven years.
Irene belonged to the Regina Coeli Church, the Catholic Women’s Club, The Altar and Rosary Society, Alliance Women’s Club, the Alliance Area Senior Center, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the ASME Auxiliary. For 23 years, Irene delivered meals weekly with the “Meals on Wheels” program in Alliance. She was a former member of the Alliance Country Club where she enjoyed playing golf with the “Linksters”. She also enjoyed playing Dominoes and Bridge, attending the Mt. Union University Continuing Lectures and the University of Mount Union football games. She mostly enjoyed her loving grandchildren.
Irene is survived by her husband, Norbert of 60 years; her children, Peter (Connie) of West Chester, Ohio, Dr. James (Mary) of Victor, N.Y. and Mary (Andrew) Wood of Queenstown, Md. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Elsie Sheakoski of Clarks Summit, Pa.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Leon and Viola (Wisniewski) Chrzan; and a sister, Marion.
The family will receive friends at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maximo on Saturday, May 4th, from 9 to 11 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Thomas Dyer as celebrant.
Interment will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Alliance.
