ORLANDO, Fla. — David Miller McCarthy, age 73, known to his friends as Miller, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at his home in Orlando, Fla., surrounded by loved ones.

Miller was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, on Nov. 13, 1939, to W. J. McCarthy, MD and Winifred (Miller) McCarthy. He graduated with the first class of Saint John High School in Ashtabula in 1957 and was awarded a football scholarship to Marquette  University, where he was both a lineman and a varsity wrestler. He earned his BS in zoology and later pursued graduate work in chemistry at The Ohio State University.

Miller was a top performer for the IBM Corporation in the 1960’s and early 70’s before starting his own company, Electron, which brought him from Ohio to Central Florida. In the 1980's, he transitioned into real estate development, which led him to his most recent endeavor, ECOBANK, an environmental mitigation banking company.

Miller was a former member of Bay Hill and Interlachen Country Clubs and former president of the UCF boosters. He was also a parishioner at Holy Family Catholic Church in southwest Orlando, but because of his 30-year friendship with Msgr. Joe Harte, he loved attending mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe, which he supported wholeheartedly.

Family, faith and friends were the center of Miller's life. He is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Linda Tanner McCarthy. Miller's pride and joy were his twins and his eight grandchildren: son, Will McCarthy of Elmhurst, Ill. (wife Maggie and children Liam, Connor, Annie and Katie); and daughter, Allison Miller of Windermere, Fla. (husband Patrick and children JP, Sarah, Caroline and Sean). He especially loved that his twins earned three degrees apiece from the University of Notre Dame, of which he was a lifelong supporter and avid fan.

He is also survived by seven of his siblings, Terrence McCarthy of Bay Village, Ohio, Mary Neighbor of Lancaster, Ohio, Kathleen Marx Banchoff of Providence, R.I., Stephen McCarthy of Orlando, Fla., Sheila Holley of Winter Park, Fla., Felicia McCarthy of Galway, Ireland and Timothy McCarthy of Ashtabula, Ohio.

Preceding Miller in death were his mother, Winifred (Miller) McCarthy; father, William Joseph McCarthy, MD; Margaret (McDonough) McCarthy; brother, Bill; and sister, Jane.

A Funeral Mass honoring Miller's life was celebrated on January 14th in Orlando, Fla.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, March 30th, at St. Joseph Cemetery Chapel, Carpenter Road, Ashtabula, with Fr. John Mulqueen presiding. Per his wishes, Miller will then be laid to rest with his parents.

Contributions in memory of Miller may be made to St. John School, 7911 Depot Road, Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.
