William A. Smith

MISSION, Texas — William Aldrich Smith, age 82, of Mission, Texas, and formerly of Andover, Ohio, shed this earthly body to go to his heavenly home to be with Christ on Saturday, March 16, 2013.

Bill was born to William Albert and Mildred Aldrich Smith. In 1948, he graduated from Andover High School and went on to graduate from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. From there Bill joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. On May 20, 1956, he married the love of his life, Jeanne Marie Wilcox.

Bill and Jeanne owned the Andover Hardware for 62 years. He ministered at the outdoor church services at The Wildwood Acres Campground, Andover, Ohio. They wintered in Mission, Texas, and are members of the McAllen, Texas, Church of God, eventually moving there in 2004.

Bill was a life time member of the American Legion; was involved in a jail ministry at the Jefferson County Jail; and served as the local representative for the Salvation Army in Cleveland, Ohio.

He worked part-time for Broadway Hardware and volunteered at Mission Hospital, Habitat for Humanity and the Personal Energy Transportation (PET), a project that made tricycles for the mobility impaired. He was honored by the Town Crier for his volunteer work. Both Bill and Jeanne were short-term missionaries to Mexico. He also enjoyed playing golf and bowling.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne; son, Mark (Diane) of California; daughters, Linda (Tim) Egli of Pennsylvania and Susan King of Ohio; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
