CONNEAUT — Helen C. Smith, age 96, of Conneaut, Ohio, passed away Saturday evening, July 20, 2013, at The Villa At The Lake in Conneaut, where she had been a resident for the past four years.
Born October 7, 1916, in Sterrettania, Pa., she was the daughter of Edroe L. and Bertha (Fischer) Hinkle.
A 1934 graduate of Conneaut High School, she received a teaching certificate from Kent State University in 1938. A teacher in the Conneaut School system for most of her career, Mrs. Smith also taught for four years in Colebrook School.
She was a member of the former Mystic Circle; a 70 year member of Eastern Star, both Rose Chapter and Orion Chapter; and was a founding member and past president of the former MacDowell Music Club.
She took piano and organ lessons at the Conservatory in Erie, and served as organist and choir director at the former Grace Lutheran Church. A member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, she also directed the choir at First Baptist Church, and taught piano lessons.
Survivors include two daughters, Marne L. (Manny) Gonzales of Conneaut, Ohio, and Nancy H. (Richard) Hess of Centennial, Colo.; four grandchildren, Kerri Ann Hellyer Walvoord, Philip J. Hellyer, Kelly Atwater Eslick and Maylene Gonzales; three great-grandchildren, Colin Eslick, Oliver Walvoord and Emily Eslick; her sister, Margaret (Ralph) Turner of Avon, Ohio; and nieces, nephews and more distant relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arnold in 1991, whom she married at Grace Lutheran Church in 1945; and her brother, Robert Hinkle.
Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, July 26th, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Lake Road and Grove St., Conneaut, Ohio, with the Rev. Franklin J. Gore officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday evening, July 25th, at THE MARCY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio, and also at the Church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Service at 11 a.m. Orion Chapter of Eastern Star will conduct a Memorial Service Thursday evening at 7:45 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Abiding Memorial Fund of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church specifically for music and education. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home and at the Church.
