John G. Hreha

ASHTABULA —

John George Hreha, age 89, of Carnation St., passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014, in the Hospice Unit of Ashtabula County Medical Center.

He was born August 10, 1924, in Pierpont, Ohio, the son of John and Anna (Kucik) Hreha and had been a lifelong Ashtabula County resident. He graduated from Pierpont High School and joined the Merchant Marines where he served during World War II before being honorably discharged.

Prior to his retirement, he worked most of his life as a meat manager first for Kroger for 10 years, then for A&P for 30 years, and later for Moses Super Duper from where he retired.

A devout Cleveland sports fan, he was always cheering for his beloved Browns, Indians and Cavaliers. John played guitar and sang to the kids when he was younger. He enjoyed country music (especially Ernest Tubb) and was a square dance caller. But most of all, he was devoted to his family and dearly loved catering to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years, Dona (Anderson), whom he married June 30, 1951; five children, Patricia Ann Hreha and Nancy Lee Hreha, both of Ashtabula, John David (Andrea) Hreha of New Philadelphia, Steven Jeffrey (Susie) Hreha of Berne, Ind., and Annette Danielle (David) Garber of Naperville, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Aaron, Ashley, Geoff, Megan, Jake, Alina, Alex and Aidan; two great-grandchildren, Reese and Regan and one more on the way; two sisters, Helen Black of Conneaut and Anna Henderson of Ashtabula; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Zakel, Elizabeth Butas, Suzanne Barchock and Pauline Black; and his parents.

Calling Hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 6th, at ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 7th, at Our Lady of Peace, St. Joseph Church, 3330 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, with Fr. Ernesto Rodriguez presiding. Entombment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery Mausoleum with Full Military Honors by American Legion Dewey Howlett Post #103.

Contributions may be made to the family or to the American Heart Association on behalf of his daughter Annette Danielle Garber.
