SARASOTA, Fla. — Frank Duva, age 94, died Friday, June 14, 2013, at Dr.’s Hospital in Sarasota, Fla.
Frank was the youngest of four sons born to Carmen and Theresa (Gallterio) Duva in Pittsburgh, Pa. on May 23, 1919. At the age of fourteen, he and his family moved to Conneaut. Frank had remained an Ashtabula County area resident. He and Gilda spent their winters in Sarasota returning home to be with family and friends. After Gilda’s passing, he became a fulltime resident of Florida.
On June 22, 1940, he and the former Gilda Bruno married in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, and together they celebrated sixty-two years of love and memories. Frank and Gilda remained faithful active members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Frank was a Veteran of the United States Army serving during WWII, he was proud of his service to his country, and remembered with fondness those men with whom he served and those who never returned. While serving our country; Frank was awarded the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, and the Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Ashtabula to resume his life with his wife, Gilda and daughter, Charlotte.
Frank was a valuable employee of Reliance Electric for more than thirty years. He enjoyed his job as a welder and remained friends with many of his co-workers after his retirement.
As a young man, Frank discovered the enjoyment he received from shooting a good game of pool. Over the years, he played pool in the Ashtabula area as well as a league in Florida; where he won trophies. Ping-Pong was also a hobby in which Frank excelled; he and his daughter, Charlotte were a good team. An avid walker, he walked many miles while living in Ashtabula; he continued his hobby of taking long walks while living in Florida.
Frank was a wonderful husband, and father. He will be remembered for his wonderful work ethic, his attention to detail, the way in which he cared for Gilda during her illness, and his love for his family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Charlotte O’Block of Painesville; and family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gilda (Bruno) Duva who died on Jan. 1, 2003; his brothers, Vince, James and Ed Duva; and his parents, Carmen and Theresa Duva.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m., Monday, June 24th, at Our Lady of Peace Church, Mount Carmel Worship Site, with the Rev. Raymond Thomas presiding. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio. Full Military Honors will be provided by Dewey-Howlett Post #103 of the American Legion.
It was Franks’ request that no calling hours be observed.
