Harold M. Kapala

CLEVELAND — Harold M. “Kappy” Kapala, age 72, formerly of Ashtabula, died Saturday, March 17, 2012, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born May 10, 1939, in Ashtabula, Ohio, to the late Michael and Dagmar (Alkula) Kapala, and was a 1957 graduate of Ashtabula High School. In 1961, he was drafted into the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in 1967.

Harold retired from Millennium Chemicals in 2001 after 33 years of service. While at Millennium, he was elected president of the USW Local 7334. His direct approach, upfront personality, and leadership style were appreciated by his colleagues.  When it was time to renegotiate contracts or help with grievances, the union members wanted Harold on their side. It was for those traits that he was continually re-elected as union president for many years.

As an avid sports fan, he enjoyed bowling on several leagues, watching boxing on television and cheering for the Cleveland Indians and Browns. Harold took great pleasure in coaching his children’s sports teams and taking them to the  races at Raceway 7 in Conneaut.

Harold is survived by his children, Deborah Kapala of Cleveland and her son, Bryce; Karla Lorincz (fiancé Ron Deka) of Medina, Ohio and her daughters, Stephanie and Kara Lorincz and Allison Deka; Marcella (Eric) Sauter of Spring, Texas  and their children, Zachary, Nikole and Danica; and Harry (Sherrie) Kapala of Madison, Ohio and their daughters, Haley and Gillian; and sisters, Margaret Sisko and Carolyn Kapala, both of New York City, N.Y., Irene Kellogg of Ashtabula, Mary Wilks of Kingsville and Martha Blume of Vero Beach, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Kapala; and a sister, Lois Irene in infancy.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, March 22nd, at DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio, with Kathleen Shaffer officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens where American Legion, Dewey-Howlett Post #103 will perform Military Honors.

Calling Hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 21st, at the Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made in his name to Hospice of Cleveland Clinic, 6801 Brecksville Road, Suite 10, Independence, Ohio 44131 or the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 30, Jacksonville, Fla. 32256
