Lucille Marie (Brown) Penna, age 83, of Ashtabula, Ohio, died Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Ashtabula County Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Dec. 28, 1930, in Ashtabula, the daughter of Pete and Rose (Cotrena) Brown. She graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1948 which she call the “best years of her life”. She married Louis A. “Fagan” Penna on April 26, 1952, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
She enjoyed many things but her biggest joy was her family. She kept an immaculate house where she enjoyed baking and cooking and prepared a family dinner every week. Even as her children grew older they never missed her traditional Italian Sunday dinner. Her grandchildren even invited their friends to Grammy’s house for dinner.
She enjoyed getting her hair done and weekly lunches with her high school “club” friends, lovingly known as “the ducks”. She also would have lunch monthly at the Crows Nest with her 1948 classmates of Ashtabula High. She was coordinator of every high school reunion.
She loved the church and participated in many of its activities. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and was a member of the church choir which she joined at the age of 12. She was a soloist and sang for many weddings. She was a church bazaar worker from her teens until last year. She was a past member of the RCIA team.
Outside of the church, she had a love for learning and children. She had been a school librarian at Mt. Carmel School and was an Ohio Reads volunteer at Saybrook Elementary School. She always looked forward to watching Academic Challenge, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
Surviving her are her children, Michael (Debi) Penna, Rosemary Penna, Louis “Skip” Penna and Christine (James) Candela, all of Ashtabula; her grandchildren, Elizabeth (Seth) Cheney, Cotrena and Louis Penna, and Buddy, Seve and Kaytee Candela; and a brother, Fred Brown.
