CONNEAUT — Joan MacMillen Newcomb, age 81, died early Friday morning, March 19, 2010, at Lake Pointe Health & Rehabilitation Center in Conneaut.

Mrs. Newcomb was born in Baltimore, Md., Nov. 10, 1928, the daughter of Norma Ruth Ide and George Alton MacMillen. She spent her first 10 years in Baltimore, Md., later moving to Pittsburgh, Pa.

She graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School in 1946. She received her B.A. from the Pennsylvania College for Women in 1950 and was presented “Artist of the Year” award for her “body”, an all media art work.

She married James C. Newcomb on July 1, 1950 and spent her first few months living at their lakefront cottage in Conneaut, Ohio. The Newcomb family lived in Pittsburgh, Pa., Ada, Ohio and Kansas City, Mo. but always spent their summer months in Conneaut. In 1969, the couple moved to Conneaut and made Conneaut their home.

Mrs. Newcomb, as an artist, shared her wonderful talents with the community. Joan, an active member of the Conneaut Artists Guild, chaired seven July 4th Arts Festivals, designed sets for the McDowell Rotary musicals and was co-founder of the Ashtabula County Arts Council. Among her many accomplishments, her greatest achievement was as a co-founder of the Conneaut Community Center for the Arts, where she served as President and later as Director for 17 years.

Joan served on many mayoral appointed committees including Litter Control Board and the Education Advisory Council.

As an active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Joan served on the memorial committee, the long-term planning committee and orchestrated installing the lift. Joan and her sister helped redecorate the church library and were involved in planting flowers outside of the church. Many of her pen and ink drawings are still displayed in the church.

In 1977, she was the winner of the Zonta Award for Outstanding Women in the County. In addition, she was selected as the 1978 Citizen of the Year by the Conneaut Area Chamber of Commerce. Joan also received the Ashtabula County Realtors Award for renovation of Kilpi Hall, home of Conneaut Community Center for the Arts.
