ASHTABULA — H. Donald Coutts, age 83, of Winterhaven Ct., Ashtabula, passed away Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, in the Hospice Unit at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

He was a lifetime area resident and was born in Ashtabula on January 27, 1925, the son of Hugh Gavin and Hazel Alice (Hegfield) Coutts. He graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1943, and greatly enjoyed working on and attending all the class reunions.

A Veteran, he left for the Navy in World War II shortly after graduation, spending three years as MOMM 1/c on the U.S.S. Carroll, Destroyer Escort 171. He was a plank owner of the ship having served on it since it was commissioned and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific. For that he received an American Flag that flew on the ship during one of the crossings of the Atlantic.

Upon returning home he married Marjorie Ann Prentice at Second Congregational Church in Ashtabula, on September 7, 1946. They where married by the Rev. Milton Lotz a long time friend from Shaker Heights. They settled in Bowling Green, Ohio to attend Bowling Green State University. He then returned home where Don spent thirty five years with Reliance Electric, retiring in 1982. He then worked for the Ross-Billman Funeral Home, now the Fleming & Billman Funeral Homes.

He was an exceptional husband, father, and grandfather being immensely proud of his family. He had three daughters, Constance Ann Stanbery of Avon Lake, Ohio; Cary Evalyn (Martin) Kata of Martinez, Ga. and Cynthia Elizabeth (Daniel) Priest of Ashland, Ohio. Don was a gentle man and a gentleman loving to spend time with his family and also with many good friends. He never met a man he didn’t like and his Church family was important to him.

He was a faithful member of Second Congregational Church where he was active as a choir member for 46 years; he served as moderator, chairman of trustees, chairman of Diaconate, President of the Men’s club and stewardship committee. In 2004 he was named trustee emeritus and was known to visit the church almost daily. He helped on the Amistad Committee and especially enjoyed being involved with The Free Wheelchair Mission founded by Dr. Donald Schoendorfor of California, a former church member.
