ASHTABULA — Donald Joseph Scott, age 91, died Monday, July 15, 2013, at Saybrook Landing.

The son of Michael Joseph and Eva (Bullard) Scott, he was born on May 12, 1922, in Oswego, N.Y. On August 8, 1944, he married Helen Louise Hakala and together they celebrated fifty-nine years of love and memories, prior to her death on May 20, 2004.

Don was a proud Veteran of the United States Army. During his time of service from 1942 to 1946, he was stationed in India, serving as a Surgical Technician and was honorably discharged after having achieved the rank of Corporal. Don was employed at the A&B Docks in Ashtabula, unloading the ore boats as they came into the harbor. During his time working at the docks, he earned the respect of many of his fellow workers. During the winter lay-offs, he delivered the mail and worked at Ashtabula Rubber, Iten Fiber, and for the Cotton Club Bottling Company. Don enjoyed providing for his family.

He and his wife Helen were long-time members of Faith Lutheran Church, where he served as a trustee for many years. He worked tirelessly with the Faith Food Pantry; Don had compassion and love for his fellow man and felt it was his calling to serve others less fortunate than he.

A man who could grow anything in his yard, he enjoyed coming home after work and puttering in the yard.

For many years, Don and Helen spent their winters in Sebring, Fla. Don’s wonderful green thumb allowed him to send fresh oranges and grapefruits to his family and friends in Ashtabula. After Helen’s death, Florida was never the same and he was content to remain in Ashtabula with his friends and family.

Don will be remembered for his wonderful work ethic, his love for his friends and family, being a grandpa that spoiled you with love, his deep faith, and his servant’s heart.

Don is survived by his daughter, Sue (Jeff) Nelson of Ashtabula, and his son, Donald (Deborah) Scott of Baltimore, Md.; grandchildren, Stacey Tackett and her fiancé, Mark Gillespie, of Jefferson, Justin (Victoria Fumich) Nelson of Willowick, Nicholas Scott and Sam (Barrett) Scott, both of Maryland; three great-grandchildren, Colton Tackett, Ryan and Lucas Nelson; his brother, Robert Scott of Buffalo, N.Y.; his niece, Mara Carroll; and great-nephew, Liam Carroll.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen; and his parents.

Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 19th, at DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Jeff Stoll, pastor of Saybrook United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio.

A Calling Hour will be observed from 10 a.m. until the time of Service at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 19th, at the Funeral Home.
