ASHTABULA — Herbert A. Thompson, age 82, passed away at ACMC Hospice Unit, on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, after a yearlong battle with lung cancer.

The son of Clifford and Margaret (Kennedy) Thompson, he was born in Berea, Ohio, on Nov. 13, 1930. Herbert graduated from Berea High School in 1949 and joined the United States Air Force in 1951. He received an honorable discharge in 1954, after have achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant.

On June 27, 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Walters, and they moved to Ashtabula to begin their lives. Herbert and Joyce recently celebrated sixty years of love, laughter and memories.

Herbert retired from the Star Beacon as Business Manger after a thirty-five year career. He began as a circulation district manager and worked in many positions; including, retail-advertising manager for the Star Beacon, Conneaut-News Herald, general manager of Geneva- Madison Printing Company, and the Conneaut – News Herald.

Herbert was a man of many talents; he could fix, build, or repair anything. He made quilt racks and doll furniture, repaired cars and remodeled his home and the homes of his daughters.

Herbert was a master of the game of golf. If there was a course to be played, Herbert was there. He and his golfing buddies enjoyed all of the local courses. He taught his grandchildren to hold a club when they were just barely able to walk.

Herbert will be remembered for his wonderful work ethic, his ability to drive a golf ball a long distance and his unequaled love for his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; their daughters, Penny (Charlie) Sillery of North Carolina, Pamela Thompson of Savannah, Ga., and Patricia O’Block of Ashtabula; his much loved and cherished grandsons, Joshua and Connor O’Block also of Ashtabula; his brother, John (Mitzie) Thompson of Greenville, S.C.; his sister, Ruth Weston of Berea, Ohio; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his five brothers, Clifford, William, Raymond, Nelson and Robert; two sisters, Mary in infancy and Margaret Rennent; and his parents.

A Funeral Service will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12th, at the ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, Ohio, 44004, with the Rev. Raymond Thomas presiding.

Military Honors will be provided by American Legion, Dewey-Howlett Post #103 of Ashtabula.

Calling Hours will be observed from 4 until 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12th, at the ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME.
