ASHTABULA — Eugene J. Cellitti, age 85, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, in the Hospice Unit at Ashtabula County Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He is now at peace with God and reunited with his wife Elizabeth.

He was born in 1928 in Newark, Ohio, the son of Theresa (Esposito) and Dominic Cellitti. He was a graduate of Ashtabula High School. On Nov. 24, 1949, he married Elizabeth Vitale in Ashtabula.

His parents opened Cellitti's Market in 1945 where Gene and his brother Joe worked most of their lives, in 1985 they opened Cellitti's Clothing. They also owned Cellitti's Excavating which they closed after their father passed away. Gene also worked for RMI and did snow plowing until 2005.

Gene was a strong willed man and was always helping people, he would tackle any job and was able to fix just about anything. He loved to go to garage sales and buy lawn mowers and restore them. He also was an avid hunter and looked forward to the start of deer season. He also enjoyed crossbow hunting, fishing and was a very competitive Bocce player. During football season, he loved watching the Browns lose and Pittsburgh win. Everyone enjoyed his quick wit and sense of humor.

Gene and his daughter Donna had a love of horses, they attended many horse shows and went trail riding every weekend. He later bought a quarter horse “Candy Queen” for Donna and they enjoyed riding behind Columbus Street School.

Gene took such pride in taking care of his home and landscaping his yard. He was so proud of his yard and made sure his bushes were always trimmed and his flowers were planted in perfect configuration.

He is survived by his daughters, Terri (Joel) Cuffman of Ashtabula and Donna (Herman) Madden of Saybrook; and his son, Dominic of Cleveland; grandchildren, Tracy (Chris) Deluca of Geneva and Cami Stebbins of Ashtabula; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Gabriella and Gianna DeLuca and Isabel Clement; one brother, Joseph (Delores) Cellitti; nieces, Betty (Gary) Capitena and Joanna (Paul) Daniels; nephew, Joe Cellitti; and a special cousin and friend, Mario (Pat) Cellitti.

He was preceded by his wife, Elizabeth on Nov. 21, 2009; his parents; and many aunts and uncles.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 19th, in Our Lady of Peace Parish, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, with Father Raymond Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, at GUERRIERO FUNERAL HOME, 1550 W. 19th St., Ashtabula.
