CONNEAUT — Giles “Guy” I. Vorse, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013.

Guy was born in Sharkeyville, Pa., to Irvin and Ada Vorse. He grew up in Girard, Pa., with brothers, Ralph, Bob and Clarence; and sisters, Jennie and Ellen.

He met the love of his life Betty Bricker and they celebrated 65 years of marriage. They were blessed with three children, Barbara Soltis of Geneva, Barry (Diane) Vorse of Jacksonville, Fla., and Dennis Vorse (deceased); and four grandchildren, Michelle Soltis, Rebecca (Dick) Pierce of Geneva, Richard (Carleeta) Soltis Jr. of Canton and Alan (Shannon) Vorse of Minneapolis; and five great-grandchildren, Dana, Nicole, Zachary, Adam and Andrew. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Winnie Vorse of North Jackson, Ohio; and by his loving nieces and nephews.

A Veteran, he was a member of our nation’s “Greatest Generation” proudly serving in the U.S. Army in World War II during the Philippine and Solomon Islands campaigns and being honored with the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with a Bronze Star. He enjoyed regularly keeping in touch with his war buddy, McKinley Lehman, of Tennessee.

Guy retired in 1983 from the P & C Dock Company in Conneaut as a master machinist after 36 years of dedicated service.

He enjoyed restoring old tools and selling them at flea markets and festivals; working in his beautiful yard of which he always took great pride; and keeping his vehicles looking in show room condition. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home with Betty, having visited 49 of the United States; visiting Europe; and spending time with his family in Florida, Minnesota and Arizona.

As a volunteer, he helped restore the Middle Road Covered Bridge in 1984. He was also an avid fan of professional boxing. He enjoyed and looked forward to the yearly Vorse Reunion with its competitive horseshoe tournament. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and watched with pride as they grew into teenagers and young adults.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Betty in 2011; his son, Dennis in 1975; his son-in-law, Dick Soltis in 2012; and siblings, Ralph, Bob, Jennie Mealy, Ellen Cole and three younger siblings, Charles, Ruth and Elmer Vorse.
