HICKORY, N.C. — Joseph L. Schnoblen, age 73, of Hickory, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013, at the Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care Center. He was an 8 year survivor of pancreatic cancer.

Born August 9, 1939, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Bernadine Gietzen Schnoblen.  Joe served 31 years in the U.S. Naval Reserves, retiring in 1988 as a Chief Petty Officer. Following his example, two of his brothers also served in the Navy and the three of them were often together during their annual active duty training.

Following his retirement in 2002 as a process engineer from Andover Industries in Andover, Ohio, he relocated to Hickory, N.C. where he was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and spent numerous hours assisting the Knights of Columbus on various projects for the Maryvale Sisters in Vale, N.C. Although Joe was a man of few words, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and will be remembered for his quick wit and quiet wisdom. He was an avid woodworker and member of the Catawba Valley Woodcarvers. Joe was always challenging himself by learning new shop skills and techniques, and enjoyed sharing that knowledge with others as he patiently encouraged them to develop their own talent.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Patricia A. Tucci Schnoblen; two daughters, Patricia Schnoblen Frye and husband Dwight Frye of Hickory and Michele Schnoblen Postiff and husband Ronald Postiff of Rochester Hills, Mich.; two sisters, Carolyn Knotek Beattie of Sterling Hts., Mich. and Bernadine Rogers and husband Claude of Louisville, Ky.; three brothers, George Schnoblen of Center Line, Mich., Gerald Schnoblen and wife Cheryl of Sterling Hts., Mich. and John Schnoblen and wife Paula of Macomb, Mich.; three grandchildren, Meghan Frye, Katherine Frye and Matthew Frye, all of Hickory, N.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 10th, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, with Fr. Robert Ferris and Fr. Ed Sheridan officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 9th, at BASS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME in Hickory and also from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Church, prior to the Service.
