Theodore A. Kapen

CLEVELAND — Theodore Andrew “Ted” Kapen, age 76, of Austinburg Road, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2013, at his home.

He was born Sept. 20, 1936, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of Andrew and Evelyn (Pees) Kapen and had been a lifelong area resident.

He attended Edgewood High School and, prior to his retirement, worked as a lineman for CEI. He previously drove truck for Gene Anderson Enterprises and was the “go to man” at Kiraly’s Orchard doing every job imaginable.

Always very mechanical, he loved cars and tinkering with them. He attended many car shows and Antique Engine Club events. Ted loved fishing and socializing with friends at various local establishments as they shared a cup of coffee. Known to many as “Mr. Fix-it,” he received great pleasure doing things for other people.

Survivors include three children, Jan (fiancée, Agnes) Kapen of Torrance, Calif., Sandy (Tim) Shaw and Mary Lou (John) Sichko, both of Ashtabula; seven grandchildren, Jon (Alex) and Robert Kapen, Courtney and Alexis Shaw, Logan, Hayley and Ty Sichko; one great-granddaughter, Sierra; one brother, Myron Kapen, and one sister, Eileen Hennekes, both of Indiana; extended family members, Deborah Hare Brand (Ray) Platt of Jefferson and Denise Hare (Heidi Waldinger) of Erie, Pa., and Deborah’s children, Kyle (Olivia) Brand, Jacob (Kassi) Brand and Logan Platt; and his dear friends and caregivers, Karen and Steve Kiraly.

He was preceded in death by his former wife and mother of his children, Carol P. (Campbell) Kapen on Feb. 26, 2005; his companion of over 20 years, Jean Arnett Hare on Saturday, March 19, 2011; and his parents.

A Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 11th, at the ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICE, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula. Laurie Divoky, Spiritual Care Coordinator of Hospice of the Western Reserve, will preside. Burial will be in Austin Cemetery, Austinburg.

Calling Hours will be on Monday, June 10th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashtabula County Antique Engine Club, P.O. Box 168, Williamsfield, Ohio 44093 or the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.
