Thomas D. Richcreek

ORLANDO, Fla. — Former Ashtabula, Ohio, and Melbourne, Fla. resident, Thomas D. Richcreek, age 74, died Sunday, March 16, 2014, in Orlando, Fla., due to complications related to a long battle with COPD and dementia.

He was born Aug. 28, 1939, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the third child of Wayne L. and Lois (Betz) Richcreek. He graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1957 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1960.

He used his “people skills” to launch a long career in banking, starting as a teller at Ashtabula County Savings & Loan in 1960. By 1975, he was a vice president and branch coordinator. He then moved to First Federal of Ashtabula, where he held the positions of executive vice president, president and CEO.

He served as a councilman for the city of Ashtabula in 1969. He also was a member of the Ashtabula Jaycees, the Ashtabula Chamber of Commerce, Harris Memorial Presbyterian Church and BPOE #208.

He moved to Melbourne, Fla. in 1981 to continue his banking career and escape Ohio winters. After a short stint at Indian River Savings and Loan, he joined First Federal Savings and Loan of Brevard (later United Savings of America) in 1982 and remained there until consolidation in the industry left him without a job in 1992.

In 1993, he helped form Melbourne Recovery Service, perhaps the nicest collection agency in the field, and continued running the business until the end of 2010.

He is survived by his son, Christopher, daughter-in-law, Susan, and grandsons T.R. and William, all of Orlando; former wife, Nancy Richcreek of Melbourne; and a number of nieces, nephews and extended family in various locales.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Phyllis (White) Richcreek in 1989; his son, Thomas Andrew in 1971; his brother, James in 2006; and his sister, June in 2012.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, April 5th, from 10 to 11 a.m., with an 11 a.m. Service.

A second memorial service in Ohio will be held at a later date.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Comforter, 480 W. Central Parkway, Altamonte Springs, Fla. 32714.
