MEDINA — Robert H. Norton Sr., age 90, of Plymouth Township, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at the Medina Village Nursing Home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Nov. 7, 1923, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of the late Frank and Agnes (Riley) Norton and had been a lifelong area resident. Robert attended Ashtabula City Schools and the Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. After high school, Robert joined the U.S. Army, serving in the 314th Infantry, 79th Division during World War II, where he received a Purple Heart. He married the love of his life, Jane Anne Brennan, on June 26, 1948.

Robert retired from Union Carbide/Elkem Metal after 30 years of service. During that time, he also worked as a carpenter, building homes in Ashtabula.

Robert served as a Plymouth Township Trustee for over 20 years. Prior to that time, he was a member of the Township Fire Department and of the zoning board.

He was also a board member for Ashtabula County Board of DD, Ash/Craft Industries and for the Veterans Service Commission, and a member of AMVETS.

Robert enjoyed meeting with his Union Carbide/Elkem Metal retirees group and attending his army reunions. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Two of his favorite family activities were camping and his sons’ Little League Baseball games.

Robert is survived by his children, Robert “Corky” Norton Jr., and his wife, Mary “Aggie”, of Beavercreek, Ohio, Jane Norton and her husband, Martin Robinson, Molly Norton, Michael Norton, and Patrick Norton, all of Medina, Ohio; grandchildren, Erin (Jason) True, Kelly (Sara) Norton and Anne Norton (fiancé, Tim Kenney); great-grandchildren, Brennan Norton and Lucy True; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Fiebiger; nieces, Meg Fiebiger and Karin (Pat) Hartigan; and nephew, Terry Brennan.

Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Jane in 2005; his parents; his uncle and aunt, George and Jennie (Norton) Tinsler, who raised Robert after the passing of his father when Robert was 11; brother, Edward and his wife, Virginia, Norton; and his in-laws, Edward and Margaret Brennan, Edward and Therese Brennan Jr., Kurt Fiebiger, Gloria Norton, and Patrick Brennan.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 29th, at ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Fr. Ernesto Rodriguez, presiding. Inurnment will be at Plymouth Cemetery at a later date.

Calling Hours will be held on Friday, March 28th, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Robert’s name to the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department, 1001 Plymouth Road, Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.
