ASHTABULA — Joseph D. Rich Jr., age 45, of Ashtabula, passed away Friday, March 21, 2014, at home after over a 2 year courageous battle with multiple organ cancer.
Joe was born Feb. 7, 1969, in Ashtabula and was a 1987 graduate of Harbor High School where was an outstanding basketball player.
Joe’s love of basketball never left him. He played whenever he could until he was physically unable to play anymore. He also enjoyed golf when he could. He traveled to Indiana with his friends Aaron Delprince and Al Reister to play. When Joe was diagnosed the prognosis was poor, he decided then “he was going to live his life and do the things he could in what time he had left.” HE VACATIONED TO Myrtle Beach, Wisconsin, New York and Kentucky with his girlfriend Sherri and her son Logan, also stopping in Virginia to see his brother, Greg. An avid Steeler fan, he attended Steeler games and Cavs games. He spent quality time with his brother, Bart. His friends Joe Massi and Ramsy Zull stopped to see him daily. When he could he spent time with his son, Landon.
Joe was an umpire for both Ashtabula and Saybrook baseball leagues. In 2011, he had the pleasure and honor of being inducted into the Ashtabula County Basketball Hall of Fame.
Surviving Joe are his two sons, Josh Rock of Texas and Landon Swann of Conneaut; his girlfriend with whom he lived, Sherri Sullivan and her son, Logan Sullivan; his brothers and sister, Bart (Gail Pomales) Meade of Geneva, Scott Mather of Kingsville, Greg (Chris) Mather of Virginia, Brian Mather of Ashtabula, Brad Mather of Ashtabula and Susan Renee Smith of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Ann Ward.
Calling Hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 25th, at the Ashtabula Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND CREMATORY, 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula.
At Joe’s request, there will be no services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the family in care of the funeral home.
