CONNEAUT — Douglas A. Wheeler, age 80, of Conneaut, Ohio, died unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday morning, Dec. 24, 2013.

He was born May 11, 1933, in Conneaut, the son of Gerould and Marion (Joiner) Wheeler. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

A 1951 graduate of West Springfield High School, Doug was a local and OTR truck driver for Lyons Motor Express, and Yellow Freight from which he retired in 1996. He was a former member of the Conneaut Eagles and Moose Clubs, the Lake Erie boat Club, and the Springfield Rod and Gun Club. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing and remodeling his home. He was known for his dry sense of humor and wit.

Survivors include his wife, Myra Jean (Eaton) Wheeler whom he married Nov. 26, 1955; his daughter, Sheryl “Sherry” Wheeler of Ladson, S.C.; two sons, Gerould “Jerry” (Brenda) Wheeler of Hanahan, S.C. and Robert J. “Bob” Wheeler of Pell City, Ala.; his brother, Duane (Shirley) Wheeler of Conneaut, Ohio; six grandchildren, Jeremy, Joshua, Greg, Mark, Michelle and Amanda; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a great-grandchild, Alex.

Memorial calling hours will be held Saturday, Dec. 28th, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Doug’s home, 220 Woodland Ave., Conneaut, Ohio.

MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio, has charge of arrangements.
