ASHTABULA — Joseph A. Azzano, age 67, died unexpectedly Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at his residence in Ashtabula, Ohio.

He was born Feb. 7, 1946, in Ashtabula, the son of Albert R. and Margaret I. (Bliss) Azzano and has been an area resident most of his life.

Mr. Azzano was a Veteran of the U. S. Army, serving during the Vietnam Era. He was a deputy and corrections officer for the Ashtabula and Lake Counties Sheriff’s Departments from 1976-1989. He retired as a Lieutenant from the Lake Erie Correctional Institute in 2009.

Mr. Azzano loved to cook, with meatballs and wedding soup being his specialty, and always enjoyed being with family and friends.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas P. Azzano of Mentor and Matthew J. Azzano of Ashtabula; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; his former wife, Judith A. (Higley) Azzano of Mentor; a brother, Alexander Phillips, and a sister, Carol Jennings, both of Ashtabula.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Tammy I. Azzano Heath in 2008; a grandson, Jason Matthew Hall; and two brothers, Jack Mecci and Harold “Sonny” Phillips.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Oct. 2nd, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Jefferson Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND CREMATORY, INC., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, Ohio.

A Memorial Reflection will begin at 4 p.m. to commemorate Mr. Azzano’s life. Alisa Nierzejewski will lead the service.
