CONNEAUT — Ricki N. Richards, age 57, of Conneaut, Ohio, formerly of Alberta, Ala., passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.

He was born June 11, 1955, in Conneaut, Ohio, the son of George M. Richards and the late Dolores J. (Woodworth) Richards.

Ricki graduated from Conneaut High School where he excelled in football and baseball. He enlisted in the Marine Corps during his senior year. He went to basic training at Parris Island, N.C. where he graduated #1. He then went to electronics school for his specialty training, after which he was sent to Korea where he met his wife MeJin. They had two great children, April and J.J. Following his duty in Korea, he tried out for the Marine Corps traveling softball team. He traveled all over the world playing ball for the Corps. His playing days were interrupted by Desert Storm following which he was selected to deploy on U.S. Navy ships to set up satellite systems for the Navy. His last ship duty was on the U.S.S. Wasp, from which he retired. He was the only Marine to retire from a Navy ship and the Navy was very proud of Ricki’s service. The Captain of the U.S.S. Wasp made Ricki a Chief, a rank equivalent to his Gunnery Sgt. E7 of the Marine Corps. Ricki retired with 21 years of service, winning many awards for serving his country.

Ricki is survived by his father George Richards of Conneaut, Ohio; his daughter, April M. Richards and his son, J.J. Richards, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, David (Colleen) Richards of Zionsville, Ind. and Sean Richards of Mentor, Ohio; his sister, Debra L. Oakes of Conneaut; and nieces, nephews and more distant relatives.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dolores; and both grandparents.

Burial with Military Rites will take place at 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 19th, in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio.
